The METRO Group Future Store Initiative sees itself as the driving force for the long-term modernization process in the trade sector at both national and international level. The cooperating partners commit themselves in a variety of ways –  here is an overview of the most important projects:

RFID
Experts predict that so-called Radio Frequency Identification (RFIDRead more) will decisively change processes in commerce in the coming years. The METRO Group has been successfully using this key technology for contact-free identification on pallets and other logistic units in its supply chain since November 2004. Prior to this, extensive pilot projects had been carried out within the framework of the METRO Group Future Store Initiative.

 

 

METRO Group RFID Innovation Center
At the METRO Group RFID Innovation CenterRead morein Neuss, the cooperating partners are presenting a range of new technological applications, for example for warehouse management or for the department store of the future. The Center also serves as a test laboratory for Radio Frequency Identification. The participating companies from the IT sector and consumer goods industry are working continuously on improving RFID technology.

 

 

International Committees
Members of the METRO Group Future Store Initiative are also very active on various international committeesRead more. Their know-how is contributing to the definition of uniform worldwide standards and guidelines for new technologies, not least for the responsible application of RFID. Part of this work involves educating consumers in this technology and drawing their attention to its use.

 

 

Trade fairs and Congresses
At international trade fairs and congressesRead more, such as CeBIT 2006 in Hanover, the METRO Group Future Store Initiative will be presenting trade and retail themes of the future to the interested specialist public. At its trade fair standRead more , the initiative will be staging a futuristic show with genuine hands-on innovations. Visitors will be able to try out new technologies themselves and get acquainted with the visions of the future conceived by the cooperating partners. In this way the initiative will communicate the potential of these new technologies for the world of commerce.
