Tomra Systems

Tomra Systems GmbH is a leading manufacturer and distributor of reverse vending systems for empty bottles and beverage containers. It currently services approximately 16,000 machines in German food discounters, supermarkets and hypermarkets. Tomra’s responsibilities include the maintenance and technical upgrading of its machines, for instance adapting them to new returnable packaging standards. The company with offices in Hilden near Duesseldorf employs 200 people in Germany. Its parent company, the publicly listed Tomra Systems ASA corporation, is headquartered in Asker, Norway.

As a Silver Partner of the METRO GROUP Future Store Initiative, Tomra contributes its extensive know-how regarding the German return-for-deposit system. For the METRO GROUP RFID Innovation Center, the company has developed a machine for the reverse vending of returnable beverage containers which automatically identifies bottles by means of Smart Chips. The system helps increase transparency throughout the recycling chain while at the same time preventing fraud more effectively.
