Impinj Inc.

Impinj Inc. is a global leader in the invention and development of UHF RFID technologies. Its range of products and services includes solutions for item-level tagging and other supply chain tasks. The company provides the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers with patented innovations such as nonvolatile memory – a type of computer memory that can store information without requiring a constant power supply. Impinj was established in 2000. It is headquartered in Seattle, USA, and has offices in California and Japan.

 Enhancing customer service

As a Silver Partner of the METRO GROUP Future Store Initiative, Impinj is participating in a pilot project focused on the application of RFID at the consumer-goods level. Working together with other partners of the initiative, Impinj has developed an end-to-end RFID solution which is now operational in the menswear department at Galeria Kaufhof in Essen. It encompasses various customer-oriented applications such as Smart Shelves, Smart Mirrors and Smart Dressing Rooms. The RFID handheld readers supplied by Impinj support sales staff in stocktaking tasks and provide them with additional product information. The project aims at simplifying retail workflows by applying a uniform RFID infrastructure based on UHF and Gen. 2 transponders.

The real,- Future Store is another location for Impinj research. The store uses the company’s innovative RFID applications to ensure complete quality control in the store’s fresh food department.

 SELECTED PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Speedway UHF Gen. 2 RFID reader

Impinj developed the Speedway reader specifically for RFID systems that are based on the UHF Gen. 2 standard. It supports data capture rates of up to 640 kilobytes per second and operates reliably in all environments. The device is certified to EPCglobal standards for seamless integration into different RFID infrastructures. METRO GROUP is deploying it in its Galeria Kaufhof department stores.

 Monza UHF Gen. 2 transponder

The Monza transponder was the first UHF Gen. 2 chip to receive EPCglobal certification when it was launched on the market in 2005. It is characterized by a flexible operating range, high read rates and reliable operation. In combination with the Speedway reader and the company’s near-field antennas, the chip achieves such high sensitivity that identification of stacked goods in the near field poses no problem at all. Monza transponders can be combined with different types of antennas. They are currently used on more than 500 million pallets, boxes and products worldwide.
